In 1995 director Kevin Reynolds gave the world the sci-fi blockbuster Waterworld.
Well, it was meant to be a blockbuster but sadly for Reynolds and star Kevin Costner it only pulled in $264 million worldwide from a massive $175 million budget (which really was massive for its day). Despite earning (gross) more than its budget it was still a giant financial failure. One of the biggest in its day.
That said, some people still loved the film and so I’m sure there’ll be a die-hard Waterworld fan or movie prop collector out there who will jump at the chance to own one of the actual set used weapons.
Right now on Ebay a seller is giving you the chance to do just that by selling an original screen used Smoker Rifle, a weapon used by ‘Smokers’ who in the film are the bad-ass sea pirates.
The image above is the actual prop for sale.
I don’t know a great deal about the Smoker Rifle. I can’t find any images of it on the net. I don’t have it in me to watch the film again to try and find a scene that I can screenshot. I also can’t find a record of this weapon on the IMFDB’s Waterworld page. So for all intents and purposes I know nothing about this.
But here’s a summary of what the seller has to say:
- The gun is made out of hard rubber with heavy wire inside.
- Measures 33 inches in length x 6 inches from base to top x 2 inches thick.
- Is in very good “Screen Used” condition.
- Originally obtained from the famous Ellis FX Company. Still has it’s sticker on it from auction that Ellis FX company had.
- Comes complete with Lettter of Authenticity from the famous Ellis FX Company.
The seller wants $499.99 for this prop but is willing to entertain offers. I say make one. While I haven’t verified authenticity myself, the seller is Reel Art and they are reputable vendors.
